Blastocyst

The ovum once fertilized passes down the fallopian tube and cell division begins. At this stage we refer to the ovum as the blastocyst. A few hours after fertilization the ovum divides for the first time. It now has two cells each containing genes from both parents. The cells continue to divide every 12 to 15 hours.

FIRST FEW DAYS

Process

  1. Twenty Hours
The head of the sperm has penetrated the ovum. Both nuclei (center of the cell) are drawn toward each other and soon fuse.

  2. Thirty Hours
A few hours after the nuclei have fused, the fertilized ovum divides for the first time.

  3. Two Days
There are four visible cells. The clump of cells are embedded in nutrient cells that nourish them.

  4. Four Days
The blastocyst glides down the fallopian tubes.

  5. Eight Days
The blastocyst has landed! It now will embed itself into the uterus.

cell division

Surrounded by its transparent wall, the zona pellucida, the ovum glides into the uterus. At this stage the ovum is referred to as the blastocyst.
