Yorkshire Terriers Information: Origin, Coat & Temperament

<

Yorkies Playing: Lexie is 6 months & Sharky is 2 months

Origin:

The Yorkshire Terrier was originally a working dog used to hunt small game like mice & rats. Yorkies today still exhibit this instinctive trait. They may have originated in England and slowly migrated around the world.

Yorkies are hypoallergenic. They have hair and not fur. Perfect dogs for allergy suffers or anyone that is allergic to dogs or cats. Speaking from experience, my two sons have asthma and allergies to cats and dogs. My husband is allergic to dogs & I am allergic to cats. We have no problems at all with our yorkies saliva or dander.

Size:

Yorkshire Terriers use to be a lot larger in size. Today we see the smaller of the breed which was done by selectively breeding the smallest individuals. Over time they have minimized in size.

The modern Yorkie has adapted into a companion dog. It will be the ultimate lapdog one minute, then tough and terrier like the next. They are very territorial and protect their homes like the larger breed dogs. Size is of no difference to these little guys. The Yorkie standard states that they must weigh less than 7 lbs to compete in the show ring. Dogs typically are between 4 and 7 lbs.

Temperament:

Yorkies are independent, intelligent, easily adaptable, loyal, and spunky. They have a zest and spirit for life that will leave you inspired. They often times forget their size when seeing other animals to chase after.

Yorkies have the ability to take on the personalities of their families. If your family is outgoing, your Yorkie will follow suit. If your family is more on the mellow and laid back side, your Yorkie will tend to be that way too. They are good apartment dogs, good traveling dogs, and good companion dogs. Brought up around children they are excellent family dogs and love to play and cuddle.

Coat:

Silky Coat: The coat is the shiny, soft and fine. Care and frequent brushing is needed in order to prevent matting of the hair.

Cotton Coat: This coat requires lots of care as it looks dry and brittle. Omega 3 vitamins are excellent to help enhance this coat. Please check with your vet before giving any sort of vitamins or medications to your dog.

Woolly Coat: A woolly is what most yorkies have. The dark thicker textured coat is easy to care for & still needs brushing to maintain its luster. Because it grows really fast it is best to brush daily to prevent matting.

Some coats may also be curly/wavy and others may be straight. Some coats grow faster than others, while some are a lot slower growing. No matter what coat your yorkie has with proper care your yorkie will look his/her best.

Any pups sold can be returned to my home if they are unwanted. I do not wish to see any of my babies placed in animal shelters to be destroyed. A copy of this info will be in my contract. Please enjoy your stay & if there is anything I can help you with please feel free to contact me.
