A Look Into The Life Of A Puppy

Pediatrics

New born puppies sleep most of the time only waking to eat. While sleeping the jerk, kick and sometimes whimper. These are normal relex's that help aid in the development of muscle tone.

A good mother instintively keeps her nest and puppies clean. She will lick the belly and rectum of each puppy which stimulates the elimination relex.

Puppies Growth

  • 1 day old: Learns to nurse & bond with the mother
  • 5 days old: Puppies can raise their heads at birth but cannot support their body weight
  • 10-14 days: Their eyes and ears will open
  • 2 Weeks: Actively crawling & may be able to stand
  • 3 Weeks: Puppies can walk, stand a bit & eat from a bowl
  • 25 Days: Puppies are fully oriented to sight & sound
  • 4 Weeks: Puppies can start to be trained on a peepad's while in the whelping box by creating an are for them to use
  • 5 Weeks: Puppies should be picked up & socialized with people
  • 5-7 Weeks: Start to form relationships with people
  • 8-10 Weeks: Fully weaned from mother & eating puppy food
  • 10-12 Weeks: Puppies begin to explore their enviroment

Newborn Enviroment:

Puppies should be kept very warm for the first few weeks. A heat lamp can assure extra warmth in the whelping box along with a heating pad.

The whelping area should be kept at a steady temperature of 85F or 29C & be free from drafts or the cold. The number one cause of puppy fatality is inadequate quarters.

Cleaning/Drying of the newborn pup:

Twinkles Five Days Old:

Mothers Bond:

The mother-puppy bond begins shortly after delivery. The mother recognizes each puppy by thier distinctive scent. During the process of licking, nursing and cleaning the puppy, she establishes a bond until the puppy is weaned.

The bond does not happen right after a csection & may take upto 24 hours. Sometimes these moms have a hard time accepting their newborns. You can request to put the puppies on her nipples to feed before the sedation wears off.

A new mom may have difficulty nursing a large litter. With a little assistance she can be shown how to nurse her puppies and keep from stepping on them.

Some house pets that are close to their family members may have a hard time with motherhood if it means losing thier family members. Spend lots of time with the mom and her new litter so that she does not abandon her puppies.

The problem I had with my Pebbles and still have is that she will only eat when I am watching her and it has to be in her whelping box. Whatever it takes I will be there for her. Pebbles is with her baby 23hrs out of the day only leaving to potty and visit with us for a few minutes a day. Make sure to spend time with her and her new litter praising her job as being a new mother.

Bonding Between Mom & Pup:

Puppy & Mom:

Twinkles A Few Minutes Old

It is important for the first three to four weeks to keep visitors and children out of the whelping area. Handling the pups is very stressful for the dam. Pebbles trust me with her baby however when I have to weight Twinkles, Pebbles gets very anxious and wants to lick her and make sure everything is okay with her new baby. I reassure Pebbles that her puppy is fine & I immediately put her back afterwards.

Puppy Grooming:

Grooming at regular intervals is important in order to prevent matting of the yorkie fur. Start when the puppy is young and continue throughout their life as a routine.

Yorkies have very little fat so they become cold easily. Quickly shampoo them then wash the shampoo out making sure to remove it all.

My yorkies have long hair so I was the little guys once a week sometimes once every two weeks depending on how dirty they get. I also blow dry them while brushing with a soft brush.

Daily brushings will help prevent matting. A slicker brush which is the point metal brush helps remove tangles but care using is important as it can hurt the puppy.

Puppy Growth Chart :

Example: 3 months old puppy = 12 weeks (Convert to weeks)
1 pound = 16 oz (Convert pounds to ounces)
12 weeks @ 1.4 lbs = 20 onces (Puppies Weight)
Conversion 16oz. X 1Lbs + 4oz = 20 ounces
Find the puppies current age to the left of the column (12 weeks)then follow weight. Once weight is found follow to the bottom of the chart and there will be an estimated weight gain.

Example puppy weights 20 onces @ 12 weeks. Therefore adult weight should be 2.5 lbs.

My puppies are the smaller of the breed so 1.4lbs @ 3 months = 2.5lbs Today at 8 months old Lexie weighs 2.14lbs. So the chart does work with a few minor differences.
